Electrocautery is a method that uses heat from electric current to destroy abnormal tissue such as tumors. It can also be used to control bleeding during surgery or injury. Electric current passes through an electrode placed on or near the tissue. The tip of the electrode is heated by electric current to burn or destroy the tissue. Electrocautery can be used in various minor surgical procedures in dermatology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, dentistry and urology.
Different forms of electrosurgery include electrocoagulation, electrofulguration, electrodesiccation and electrosection. Electrosurgery produces electromagnetic interference that can interfere with implanted medical devices. Electrosurgery is not synonymous with electrocautery, but is often incorrectly referred to as electrocautery in practice and literature.

How is electrocautery different from electrosurgery?

Any procedure that uses an electrosurgical unit (ESU) is electrosurgery. An ESU is a device that produces electricity to cut or manipulate tissue.

Electrocautery is a type of electrosurgery. It applies an electric current directly to tissue. Another type is fulguration, which creates a spark that produces enough heat to kill the targeted cells. Other electrosurgical methods provide treatment by sending an electric current into your body.
